Huawei delivered last year the world’s first triple camera system on a mobile (Huawei P20 Pro), and it performed really well. It’s night photos capability is unbeaten yet, and day photos are sharp and colourful. It get the highest score on DXoMark, and almost the best in real life, until you switch to video mode. There is no 4K 60fps and OIS, and the videos are blyurred. But now the Mate 20 Pro changes a few things, few but very important things, and has a super hardware as well as an amazing camera system.
The design is really like the P20 Pro, it has a notch on the top (little bit bigger than before), and the back is glass with pattern (depends on the colour). It comes in 4 colours, Midnight Blue, Black, Emerald Green and Twilight. Buttons on the right side, and there is no fingerprint reader on the rear, it’s integrated into the the screen. On the back the camera system is placed in a square unlike the line on the P20Pro. On the front size there is a 6,39 inches 1440 x 3120 pixels, 19.5:9 ratio (~538 ppi density) resolution AMOLED screen with always on function. Of course with Gorilla Glass. There are edges on the side, but that’s just for design, unlike the edge functions on the Samsung Galaxys.
Leica Triple camera system is similar to the P20 Pro’s with a little difference and smarter and faster AI. You can shoot macro photos like never before at a distance of 2.5cm. The second ultra wide angle lens are useful for group photos as well as panoramas. Mate 20 Pro also promises amazing night photos with AI image stabilisation. 40 MP (Wide Angle Lens, f/1.8 aperture)20 MP (Ultra Wide Angle Lens, f/2.2 aperture)8 MP (Telephoto, f/2.4 aperture)Selfie Camera is a 24 MP, f/2.0 aperture lens with 3D depth sensing. Video Mode got a few updates, but still 4K at 30fps. There are some cool functions like white and black background, portrait videos and underwater mode.
This is probably the most waited part of the Mate 20 Pro, the all new Kirin 980 7nm chipset. It promises lower power consumption, higher GPU and CPU performance and faster AI. There are two options, 6gb RAM and 128gb ROM and 8/256. But with all these improvements, the performance is just behind the Oneplus 6 and Note 9. However it’s still more than enough for everyday life, but i expected a little bit more. (it’s a lot behind iPhone XS Max).Battery improved as well, now it has a 4200mAh tank that surely provides more than a day with the new efficient chipset. There is a 40W charger in the box which can charge the phone to 70% in just half an hour. Wireless charging is given, but it’s reversible, you can charge other phones, or QI supported gadgets like smartwatches with it which is pretty cool. IP rating is finally 68 so you can submerge the phone to 2 meter for 30 minutes, and with an optional case up to 5 meters.Huawei also added 3D Face Unlock system, which works like Apples. Projecting 30000 dots (16000 iPhone X and 30000 iPhone Xs/Xs Max). It has a chance to unlock of 1<=1 000 000, the same also as Apples.
Huawei’s new flagship is now one of the best android phones, top-notch performance and amazing camera (poor video capabilities compared to competitors). Battery life is huge, and the 3D Face based unlocking system is just as fast as the in-screen fingerprint reader. Finally IP68 rating and wireless charging like other flagship phones. So to sum up the Mate 20 Pro is a big improvement, but only when compared to Huawei Phones, and not to competitors one.
