Huawei P30 & P30 Pro – A revolution in mobile photography? Review and specs

“Huawei is now closer to the top competitors of smartphones world, with it’s new P30 Pro than ever before”

Huawei is probably the fastest growing company in the smartphone sector, and it’s because they improving always. Bigger and bigger batteries, better and better performance and of course a lot of improvements in mobile photography as well.

Design and Display

Huawei’s P30 and P30 Pro is really similar to their predecessors, however there is a much smaller notch on them. They come in five colours, Aurora, Amber Sunrise, Breathing Crystal, Black and Pearl White.

On both phones there is an OLED panel with 1080 x 2340 pixels, 19.5:9 ratio and 422ppi on the 6.1” P30 and 398 on the 6.47” P30 Pro. They support HDR, always on function and they are colorful. It’s basically the same as last years Mate 20, just the size differs.

Hardware

Huawei revealed it’s 7nm Kirin 980 AI chipset last year in the Mate 20 Pro, and now it’s in the P30 & P30 Pro as well. In terms of performance, they are pretty much similar to each other, but comparing to the new Samsung with Snapdragon 855, there is still a difference. However as an everyday user you wouldn’t notice the difference, but let’s wait for real life tests and do not make an opinion just from the specs. The batteries are 3650 and 4200 mAh, and it also supports 40W fast charging which means 70% in 30 minutes. There is a reverse wireless charging on the P30 Pro, and no wireless on the P30. The speaker is now under the display, and we are afraid it will be worse than regular ones. Luckily, the P30 Pro is now IP68 rating, so can be submerged till 1 and a half meter for 30 minutes. It comes with 6 or 8 GB of RAM and up to 256GB storage.

Camera

20 MP (Ultra Wide Angle Lens, f/2.2 aperture)
8 MP (Telephoto, f/3.4 aperture,OIS)

16 MP (Ultra Wide Angle Lens, f/2.2 aperture)
8 MP (Telephoto, f/2.4 aperture,OIS)

Front: 32 MP, f/2.0 aperture (not HDR)

Finally we can see OIS on the main camera, and with the f/1.6 aperture it can capture more light. The telephoto lens give a 5x optical zoom on the P30 Pro, and 3x on the P30. That means you have a 10x lossless zoom with the two camera combination, which is pretty impressive. Moreover, in mode mode you have 50x (!!!) zoom, and we are still talking about a phone camera. The Ultra Wide angle camera has a lower FOV than the S10+, but it also has a higher resolution 20MP.

Conclusion

Well, in terms of photography, the Huawei P30 series has a lot of new features, and we will compare it with the iPhone Xs Max and the Samsung S10+ in a later article. The performance is flagship level just like the Mate 20Pro, and finally we have IP68 ratings. For all of these, the 1000$ price tag is not bad at all.
