Xiaomi is a huge chinese manufacturer with several smart gadgets, and their phones phones are pretty impressive as well. They a drone called MI Drone (review here), which is near as good as some DJI ones. Their new flagship phone is the MI 8 and its special edition, the explorer. They have almost the same specs, however we will tell you the differe Let’s check it out!
First of all the the MI 8 design is pretty simple, and a little bit like an iPhone X or Xs from the front with its notch and almost a full front display. On the back there is a double camera system, and a fingerprint reader. Buttons on the sides and C-type port and speakers on the bottom. AND NOW the Explorer edition. From the front it’s the same, but on the back there is a transparent glass which is amazing and really “techy”. You can see a small part of the motherboard, the chip with a Qualcomm logo, the battery and the wireless charging panel. I know non all are real, some of them are sticker, but that doesn’t change the fact that this is the COOLEST looking phone. Both models has a 6.21” AMOLED display with 2248 x 1080 FHD+ (402ppi) resolution, and supports always on mode.
The MI 8 has a Snapdragon 845 with Adreno 630 with 6gb of RAM and 128gb of ROM, whereas the Explorer Edition has 8gb RAM (others are the same). They both performs much better than we would need, the most demanding games are smooth and the phone is not going to burn your hand.
Both models have the same camera system, on the back there are two lenses -12MP wide-angle lens, 4-axis optical stabilizer, f/1.8 -12MP telephoto lens, portrait lens, f/2.4It supports optical stabilisation (just the first lens), HDR, AI Beauty and Portrait mode which is becoming more and more popular. The AI scene detection looks pretty impressive, it has 25 categorie and 206 different scenes. On the front there is a single 20MP camera with a portrait also, ad can detect 10 different scene as well. The phone can record 4K at 30fps, slow mo video is 1080p 240 fps. There is one huge thing we haven’t spoken about yet, and that is the 3D Face unlock system. It uses the same method as the iPhone X just with half of the dots. The system is consist of an infrared camera, front camera, and a dot protector, and it is so fast. We don’t know how secure it is, but it’s better than a fingerprint reader, which is under the screen. YES FINALLY! A flagship Phone with an in screen fingerprint reader. It works fast, and accurate.(Mi 8 doesn’t have 3D face unlock just the Explorer edition, as well as the in-screen fingerprint reader, it has it on the back)
Xiaomi did again a really good value phone with loads of features, and impressive technology. This is their best phone yet, and the coolest looking on the market. It has only one drawback, it lacks an IP rating. If it had it, it could be the most intuitive phone of the year, however it’s still a good choice for everyone who likes Android and would like a special flagship phone.
